During our recent trip to India we felt very privileged to visit the factories and showrooms to witness first hand our beautiful furniture being made. Artisan furniture making in Rajasthan is an art form that has been passed down from generation to generation. The furniture is crafted by skilled artisans who use traditional techniques and tools to create unique pieces that are both stylish and functional. The furniture and home accessories are made from a variety of materials such as wood, metal, and stone, and are often adorned with intricate carvings and designs.

One of the defining characteristics of artisan furniture making in Rajasthan is the use of vibrant colours in the design. Rajasthan is known for its colourful culture, and this is reflected in the furniture that is produced there. The use of bold colours and intricate designs is a hallmark of Rajasthan furniture, and it is these elements that make the furniture so distinctive and attractive.

We looked on in awe as these accomplished artists hand painted the furniture using a wide range of colours in their designs. Bright shades of red, blue, green, and yellow are often used to create a bold and striking look. These colours are often combined with intricate patterns and designs to create a truly unique piece of furniture.

The use of colour in artisan furniture making in Rajasthan is not just about aesthetics, however. Colour plays an important role in the design of the furniture and is often used to convey meaning and symbolism. For example, red is a colour that is often associated with love and passion, while blue is associated with calmness and tranquillity. By using these colours in their designs, artisans are able to convey a particular mood or emotion in their furniture.

Another important aspect of the use of colour in Rajasthan furniture making is the way in which it is applied. Artisans use a variety of techniques to apply colour to their furniture, including painting, staining, and dyeing. Each technique produces a different effect, and artisans will often choose the technique that best suits the design they are working on.

One technique that is commonly used in Rajasthan furniture making is block printing. This is a method of printing where a block of wood is carved with a design, and then dipped in ink or dye before being pressed onto the surface of the furniture. This technique allows artisans to create intricate patterns and designs that are both beautiful and unique.

The use of colour in Rajasthan furniture making is not limited to the furniture itself. Artisans also use colour to decorate the spaces in which the furniture is displayed. Walls, floors, and ceilings are often painted in bold colours that complement the furniture and create a cohesive look.
